Initially, O’Steen raced #83901 only occasionally while both he and Helmick participated seriously in other racing venues with podium finishes at numerous endurance racing events, including class wins at Sebring, Daytona and Le Mans. In 1979, O’Steen began a determined effort to win the E Production National Championship. He quickly became a consistent frontrunner, winning the National Championship in 1981.
